If you’ll be good, or bad.
From your very first breath, those around you influence everything about you.

My demons have returned.
And they’re back with a vengeance.
The only protection I have is a Motorcycle Club.
I helped them. Now they’re helping me.

He gets on every nerve I have left.
The tension between us is high.

Blog Tour - Defining Human by Candace Blevins

My Thoughts

The Only Human series is one of my favs and I am a huge fan of Candace's books, so I really couldn't wait to dive into the continuing story of Kirsten. Candace has created one hell of a woman in her. She is strong and sassy and runs with the big boys. LOVE this character and the stories surrounding her. Every time I read a book in this series I truly am amazed at how Candace's mind has created this world. She has given it so much detail that you really feel immersed in it as well as awed that she put it all out there for us to jump into with her. One of the things that I love about Kirsten's strength is that it isn't just physical, but mental and emotional as well. You feel the struggle she has with balancing between being a total badass and just being a mom. Now about those men of hers...I heart Nathan. So much and I want her with him. I am utterly disappointed with Abbott. I am so looking forward to whatever Candace has in store for her in books to come. I loved this part of her story.

I give Defining Human 5 hearts!

About the Book

Book four of the ONLY HUMAN series…

Kirsten negotiated for what she hopes will be two glorious hours with Xaephan, but the Lord of Lust has his own ideas of how the afternoon will transpire, and the consequences of her evening are long lasting.

Her deal with Ryan means she must go to Africa to help guard gazelles for a week. She trains for the event, but her preparation doesn’t cover the Strigorii vampires who have their eye on her. Since she broke up with Abbott, gaining control of her will be like hanging a sign saying they’re more powerful than The Abbott without having to actually fight him.

Throw in complications with Nathan and a few battles with her old enemy Aquila, and Kirsten doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going. She wants peace and quiet with her daughter, but is it possible? Is she too embroiled in supernatural politics to live a normal life? Kirsten feels as if she’s become a game piece in a sick game of chess, and she wants off the board.

“Chère, it’s good to see you.” Xaephan walked to a nightstand, opened a drawer, and chuckled. “Your lion follows instructions well.” He stood and inhaled. “He’s close enough to keep an eye on you. Nice.”

“He isn’t my lion. He’s my friend, and he happens to be a lion.”

“He’s more yours than anyone else’s, Chère. Eventually, you’ll have to confront his Pride, but he’s keeping them in check, for now.”

I forgot what I’d intended to say when he lifted a paddle and flogger from the drawer, followed by a large glass butt plug and a worn leather strap.

The first three items were obviously new, but the strap wasn’t, and I eyed it a few seconds while I tried to figure out how to word my question. “The strap has a story. I want to hear it before you use it on me.”

“It belongs to your lion and is on loan to me for the evening.”

I shook my head. “No. I don’t know what you hope to accomplish by using something of Nathan’s to whip me, but I don’t agree to it.”

“Nothing in our agreement says I can’t, Chère. You said I’d have to act in your best interest, and you bound me from tricking you into anything. I said to find a place I could spank you and make you scream without us being heard, and I warned you moving the marks will hurt nearly as bad as receiving them in the first place. Nothing in that agreement says I can’t use something belonging to the Lion King to spank you with.”

I crossed my arms. “I don’t like it.”

He gave me a rakish grin. “Works for me. Our two hours of Earth-time doesn’t begin until we get started, so get rid of the robe and bend over the bed.”

Part of me wanted to bitch about him being a jerk, part of me appreciated the emotional distance it created. I stood, tossed the robe onto a chair in the corner, and bent over the tall bed. I’m short, so I don’t think it worked out quite the way he intended.

“On second thought, tiny human, bend over the chest at the foot of the bed.”

About the Author

Candace Blevins has published more than thirty books. She lives with her husband of nineteen years and their two daughters. When not working or driving young teens all over the place, she can be found reading, writing, meditating, or swimming. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhound is usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company.

Candace writes Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Contemporary BDSM Romance, and a kick-ass Motorcycle Club series.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's two paranormal romance series, The Chattanooga Supernaturals and The Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, are both sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Cover Reveal - Menace by Laramie Briscoe

Title: Menace
A Moonshine Task Force Series Novel
Author: Laramie Briscoe
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 9, 2018

Mason “Menace” Harrison

“Single and ready to mingle……”

Those are the words above every picture of almost every female that strikes my interest on this dating app my son talked me into getting. After being a single dad for seventeen years, I’m ready to spread my wings, just not with most of the co-eds who keep hitting on me and calling me daddy.

Now that Caleb’s in his Senior year of high school, I feel like I can let go of the iron-clad control I’ve had on myself without his Mom in our lives. I’ve enjoyed raising him, love the relationship we have, and while he went off the rails for a bit last year, we’re closer than we’ve ever been. He’s got a full ride to the University of Alabama, and I’ve settled into my spot with the Moonshine Task Force.

But my son doesn’t warm my bed, he isn’t someone I can share my dreams with, and he’s not the person I want to grow old with by my side. I’m not sure who that is yet, but the smokin’ hot lady going by the name BeachBum83 definitely has every single bit of my interest.

Karina Holland

“Looking for a good time, maybe more…..”

Those were the lamest words I ever typed in my life, but it was the best I had for the dating app my friend, Violet talked me into joining. I didn’t have any high hopes for myself. As a High School English teacher, I’m sick of pervy Dad’s hitting on me when they come in to discuss their child’s lack of motivation to read the classics and apply themselves.

Until the day Mason Harrison walks into my classroom. I had no idea Caleb’s Dad was the man I met off that dating app who showed me how flexible I really am in the back of his Jeep. Within minutes of the parent/teacher conference he proved the sparks weren’t one-time only when we christened my desk.

Mason and Caleb? They touch a part of my heart that no one’s ever touched before, and when a threat from the past shows up, I prove just how tough I really am.

“Will Clint be in a good mood when he comes home tonight?”
I whispered the words

as I shook the black orb in my hand.
‘Don’t count on it’ appeared within the blue triangle and

I let out a small sigh of disappointment.
So much for a peaceful evening.
Maybe relying on a Magic 8 ball to solve my problems

wasn’t the best use of my time,
but I had nowhere else to be.
I’d become what my parents had feared most—

an unemployed nobody, shacked up with her loser boyfriend.
I certainly never saw it working out like that.
“You either need to buy something or leave.”

The store owner glared at me from the other side of the counter

and I immediately felt guilty—as if I’d been doing something wrong.
“I was just browsing—” I said calmly before he interrupted.
“I know what you’re doing—you’re either casing the place

or looking to shoplift.

I don’t tolerate either; so get out.”
I opened my mouth to protest when he pointed to the sign

hanging on the door.
‘We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.’
I tossed my purse over my shoulder

and held my head high as I walked out.
I guess novelty stores were cracking down

on the types of customers they allowed.
The bell chimed over the door as it swung shut behind me

and I turned around with a smirk, middle finger in the air.

That smirk faded the minute I caught my reflection in the glass.
Is that what I looked like?
No wonder he threw me out.
My hair hung in unwashed clumps around my shoulders.

My eyes were sunken in, cheeks concave.

A fading yellow bruise was the only color on my ghost white skin.
I lowered my hand and turned away.

I couldn’t bear to stare at myself any longer.
It was like staring at a stranger.
The shopping center was almost empty, save for a handful of cars.
Everyone was off enjoying their fourth of July weekend.

I bet the Res was packed.
The Boulder Reservoir was a popular hangout spot

and this weekend would be no different.

In another life, I would’ve been out there with friends.
A lone desk chair rolled aimlessly across the parking lot

as the breeze caught it

and I found myself mesmerized by the sight of it.
How had something like that ended up here?
It was a great metaphor for my life.

That chair and I had a lot in common.
I should’ve graduated a couple of months ago.

Instead, I was here, watching my life roll past.
What goes up must come down though.
I’d convinced myself that because

Clint had personal feelings for me,
he’d never let me get addicted.

I had this crazy idea that he somehow had my best interests at heart.
I was wrong.
Clint was no longer Clint.
In his place was a temperamental monster.

The insidiousness was subtle
and his skill at hiding it was better than the mob.
Once I’d sobered up enough to see how bad things had gotten,
it was too late.

The man I loved had been taken over by addiction.
So, I made excuses for him—I said I’d never put up with abuse;

then again, I also said I’d never do drugs.
It was a bit like a lobster in a pot of water
that was slowly getting hotter.
By the time the lobster realized that something was wrong,

it was too late—the damn thing had been boiled alive.
There weren’t any shades of gray

when it came to my relationship with Clint either.
I’d seen enough over the years to know

that I was firmly ensconced in ‘accomplice territory.’
If the cops ever caught on to his illegal activities,

I was going down as well.
I noticed the owner of the shop watching me suspiciously,

so I moved over a few buildings before

sinking down onto the sidewalk.
The breeze picked up again and the chair rolled a few feet

to the left before coming to a stop.
I’d never wanted to be an inanimate object more than

I did in that exact moment.
A drop of crimson hit the sidewalk between my legs,

quickly followed by another.
I stared at it in confusion until I realized
it was coming from my nose.
Again. I wiped at it with the back of my hand.

Instead of being concerned, it just made me crave another hit.
This had to be rock bottom.

My life had become a vicious circle of white snow
and blood red reminders that I needed a fix.
I was headed nowhere—scratch that.
I was headed toward my imminent death,

yet I was too far gone to stop now.
My mind no longer raced with thoughts of ‘coulda, woulda, shoulda.’

It was wholly occupied only with thoughts of the next bump.
The most pathetic part was that

I was friggin’ content to continue living like this.
At some point over the last few weeks, I’d reached acceptance.
I was just like that chair, letting outside circumstances

move me any which way they pleased.
It’d been so long since I’d made up my own mind on anything—

so long since I wasn’t under the influence of either cocaine or Clint.
I told myself I was smarter than the drug;

convinced myself that I could handle it.

Instead, I was completely powerless against it all.
I stood up and pinched my nostrils closed

in a poor attempt to stop the bleeding.
I inhaled through my mouth and immediately began coughing

as the blood ran down the back of my throat.
The chair continued its path across the parking lot,

not even stopping to say goodbye.
Lucky chair.

Shannon is a born and raised Texan.
She grew up inventing clever stories,
usually to get herself out of trouble.
Her mother was not amused.
In junior high, she began writing fractured fairy tales
from the villain's point of view
and that was the moment she knew that she was going to
use her powers for evil
instead of good.

In 2003, she moved to Denver and met the love of her life.

After some relentless stalking and a few well-timed sarcastic remarks,
the man eventually gave in to her charms and wifed her so hard.
They welcomed a son in 2007 that they named after
their favorite Marvel superhero, Spiderman.

Sick of seeing beautiful mountains through their window every day,

the three escaped back to the desolate landscape
of the west Texas desert in 2009.
She welcomed her second son not long after
and soon realized that being surrounded by three men was nothing
at all like she'd imagined in her fantasies.

After an unplanned surgery in 2014 and a long pity party,

she decided to pen a novel about the worst thing that could happen
to a person in order to cheer herself up. She's twisted like that.
Thus, From This Day Forward was born and the rest, as they say, is history.

Not only does Shannon enjoy stalking people,

she also has a fondness for being stalked.
